Today we are finshing our Ch. 9 blog discussions.8. What is segregation? What did progressives do to help African Americans?-White people were separated from black people. Plessy v. Ferguson set this up in 1896. This stated that they were separate but equal, but they really were separate and unequal. Brown v. Board of Education Topeka, KS overturned it. Progressives did very little to help the African Americans. Woodrow Wilson did not help them very much. He used them in the election of 1912 by saying he would help them. He did not support a bill that would make it tough for people to lynch others. Wilson also allowed segregation in Washington D.C.14. What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?-Economic system that called for the control of businesses and people being more equal. Socialists wanted everything to be equal. Progressives did not believe in socialism, they thought it was going too far. Eugene V. Debs ran for president four times. He was a very big socialist, and he thought capitalism would ruin countries because a small population would run the country.16. What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business?-Businesses tried to be as efficient as possible. They made assembly lines, which made it much more efficient. Henry Ford paid his employees $5 a day. This made people want to work there.17. Describe the major social changes that affected women during the ProgressiveEra.-Women started getting a higher education. They attended colleges. Women also started working outside of the home. They worked in textile factories and worked as telephone operators. Also, they pushed for the right to vote, and eventually they accomplished it. Women also pushed for prohibition, and helped a lot in getting the act passed. Title Nine was the act that allowed women to play sports in schools, and some people were mad because they thought it was bringing men’s sports down.
