Today Alex finished his presentation. One cause of the Cold War was trust, Russia didn’t trust us because we bombed Japan a lot. We also didn’t do what Stalin wanted in WWII. We were in Africa while in Russia they were losing hundreds of thousands of people and could have used our help. Russia was trying to make Western Europe and parts of Germany communists.
Chelsea went next. 1961 shortly after Kennedy became president is the time this took place. Fidel Castro and the Bay of Pigs is her topic. Fidel Castro was a member of the Orthodox Party. Cuba had still been controlled by the US, and people like Fidel Castro were sick of it. When he became the dictator he didn’t allow voting, he took land from people, he was basically a communist. He promised democracy but he actually brought communism to Cuba.

The Bay of Pigs invasion was supposed to be against Castro. The air strike failed and the whole attack was not successful. We thought the Cuban people would like us trying to take out Castro and go along with the US, but they saw it as an invasion and us as the bad guys. Castro gained more support after the invasion. The Bay of Pigs is a bay off of Cuba. The CIA trained Anti-Castro Cubans to invade and take out Castro and the Cuban government. Anything Cuban now is not allowed in the US because of the embargo from this time. Fidel Castro 1959-2008 was their leader, his brother is now leader. The US couldn’t allow Cuba to be communists because Cuba is very close to the US. That’s why the US wanted to invade them to take them out, but the invasion didn’t work. Castro became very close with the Soviet leader, Nikita.

After the US invaded Cuba, Cuba asked Soviets to bring in nuclear missals to Cuba, so they could attack first if they needed to.
Sam went next and his topic is the Policy of Containment, The Iron Curtain Speech, The Marshal Plan, The Truman Doctrine. George Kennan created it, it was just the US wanting/trying to contain communism. The Iron Curtain Speech was said by Churchill. It was a term he used for separation of Eastern and Western Europe. He gave this speech in Missouri. The Marshal plan was the US program to create a better economy for Western Europe. The US spent billions of dollars rebuilding countries like Japan, West Germany, and other countries because we didn’t want the communists to take them over. The Truman doctrine was a term used in Cold War strategies, to contain communism. The Doctrine gave military aid to Greece and Turkey, we thought communism would spread there so we helped them. The Domino Theory was used by US, believed if country next to Communist country would become communist other countries around that country would become Communist. This brought on the Policy of Attainment.
