Today we continued presentations.
Gorbachev and Reagan
- Peristroika was Mikhail Gorbachev's idea of economic, political, and social restructuring.
- Glasnost policy of openess and freedom by Gorbachev in the 1980's.
- Ronald Reagan began as a democrat. He was the govenor of California from 1967-1975. He was president in 1981-1989. During is presidency they called it the Reagan Revolution. He was tried to be assassined but it didnt work. The Cold War and the Bombing of Libya went on during his presidency.
- INF Treaty stands for the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. It was between US and Soviet Union. It was signed in DC by Gorbachev and Reagan on December 8, 1987. They signed it to eliminate any shorter range missiles.
The Korean Conflict leading up to the war.
- Korea was split, one was communist. Syngiman Rhee protested against joint ownership of Korea. Soviets were angry but put a communist government in North Korea.
- North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950.
- Hours after South Korea retaliations, UN condemned North Korea's attack.
- On June 27, 1950 the UN Security Council decided to give armed support to South Korea. They blamed Russia on the conflict which couldve raged war.
The Cold War- Korean Conflict
- U.S. air force relied heavily the airplanes.
- The leaders for the US were Harry Truman and General Douglas MacArthur who was also the commander of the U.N. forces. MacArthur was fired by Truman because he wanted to use nuclear weapons and break out war everywhere else that wasnt focused on.
- Even after WW2 brought peace to most Americans, tensions were high between U.S. and Soviet Union.
- The Korean peninsula was divided into two parts.. The northern half was communist and backed by the soviet union. The southern half was democratic.
- In August 1945 the Soviet Union decided to invade Korea which was controlled by Japan.
- The U.S. feared the the Soviet Union would control the whole peninsula so we sent our own troops to help out the south.
- On June 25, 1950 war had begun on the 38th parallel.
- The soviet was pushing south korea back farther with an action called the pusan perimeter. MacArthur had ordered an invasion pushing them past the Yalu River.
- China warned U.N. they would react if we encroached on teh frontier of the Yalu River.
- Mao gave help to soviet and saw thier intervention nothing bu defensive.
- China figured if the U.S. woudl occupy all of Korea.
