We went over the Europe map for the first few minutes of class then we got into presentations. Matt and Isaac didn’t finish theirs yesterday but Isaac was gone today so they will finish on Monday. Chelsea, Kara, and Ana started of with their presentation on overpopulation. Overpopulation is a condition where the number of organisms in an area or habitat exceeds its carrying capacity. This topic is like the mother of all problems because too many people cause everything else to go wrong. Some of the causes include an increased number of births. Also and increased birth rate and a decreased death rate. We currently have around 303 million people that live in just the United States and this number is supposed to increase. The average has 7 to 8 children and this usually occurs in the third world countries. Overpopulation occurs in places all over the world including Ethiopia, Haiti, China, Sudan, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria, Uganda, and the United States. Overpopulation is not just the amount of people there are in each country but also about how much impact each person makes on the environment in that country. Animals have become extinct or forced to live in inhabitable places. It has increased deforestation and over half of the earth’s wetlands are gone because of it. Some of the effects of overpopulation include high birth rate, low life expectancy, social problems, poor diet and ill health, high crime rate, and dry, insufficient farmland. How can this be prevented? Immigration can be limited and the amount of children that a family has can help be prevented. The use of birth control, teaching abstinence, and the knowledge of birth control can also help prevent overpopulation. Our group will start Monday.
