Today we started the Chapter 10 project. Mr. Bruns started with out by talking about the topic of Imperialism and Colonization. Why did imperialism and colonization come about and why did the US stay isolationist until the early 1900's?I learned that Imperialism is were strong powerful countries go and take control of smaller weaker countries. Bigger countries colonized because of natural resouces. Countries started to colonize to get more money, power, land, establishing naval bases, refueling stations, "to uplift, civilize, and Christianize people" as said by McKinley, and natural resources and trade. I also learned tha the U.S stayed isolationist because we wanted foreign wars, we had a weak army and navy, we had to build up our industry, government, and internal improvements, the slavery issue, the two oceans kept us isolated, lack of technology, we had to settle the west, we had a lot of natural resources, and we followed President Washington's advice which was "stay out of foreign wars and alliances.Discuss how the US acquired Hawaii and Alaska.I learned that in 1867 Russia was going to give up the area of Alaska. The two people that most people thought would buy Alaska were Great Britain and the United States, these two places were being considered because they were located closest to Alaska because Britian was in control of Canada. I also learned that William Seward who was Secretary of State for the United States talked to the the Russian Prime Minister and he came up with a deal were the U.S would buy Alaska for 2 cents per acre, but I also learned that the House of Representatives did not want to give the money because they thought that Alaska was just icey and cold. In 1959 Alaska became a state.
