Today Rachel continued presenting on Chapter 5 Sec 1. Today I learned that settlers moved West to find gold, religious freedom, hunting, adventure, and for farming which included cattle ranching and sheep herding. I learned that gold was discovered in Colorado in 1858, the people who moved West set up boomtowns, and some people even went to set up businesses. I learned that the first restriction on land for the Native Americans was in 1834, which set up the Great Plains as a reservation. I also learned that in the 1850's the government set up land boundaries, but some Indians still hunted on their opld land and clashed with the people in the area. Next we talked about the Dawes Act, I learned that it was passed in 1877 to "americanize" Indians. They gave land to the Indians, but many white people cheated the Indians out of their land because they really did not understand what they were selling. I learned that in 1932 two-thirds of land set aside for Native Americans belonged to the white people.Next Rachel started talking about battles and why the occurred. I learned that battles started because Indians went off their land, and into land that wasn't theirs. I also learned that the government also went to battle when the Native Americans refused to be "americanized". Following the battles we restricted more land. I also learned that we sometimes formed treaties, but they usually did not last very long. The final thing I learned about today was some famous battles. They included Massacre at Sand Creek, Death on the Bozeman Trail, Red River War, Gold Rush, Cluster's Last Stand (Battle of Little Big Horn), and Battle at Wounded Knee. This is what I learned about today, we will finish this presentation on Monday.
