This week at the Santa Cruz college in California, students are sitting at the administration office in protest of the upcoming change. As we're all aware, tuition is very high for colleges right now and money is pretty tight for a lot of people. This upcoming change taking place in January is tuition is going to be raised to $8,373.But this 15% increase seems minimal compared to the upcoming increase that is taking place this fall, raising tuition to $10,302. This comes to a total increase of 32%. It's unbelievable how much extra money it's going to cost to go to college. I can't even imagine how bad it's going to be when I finally have the opportunity to go to college. The regent board approved this 32% increase on Thursday and since then, 70 students have positioned themselves inside the administration office and about 300 more have linked arms outside surrounding the building. Personally, I'm glad students are taking a stand. This is ridiculous how much tuition is right now, and something needs to change. If we want to be able to compete in the flat world like we've been talking about in Bruns' class, we have to go college to be able to compete, and the way it looks right now, a lot more people will probably not be able to afford college, which will put as at an even bigger disadvantage. Now there is a threat of being forcibly removed by police. There have been several instances like this in California pretty recently. There have been arrests made at the UC of Berkeley and the UC of Davis. UCLA also has had a protest, but nothing near as drastic as these other colleges.Though there is the possiblity of being arrested, these protesters are determined. They say they're not going to leave until their demands are met, like recent budget cuts being reversed, campus workers to stop being laid off and amnesty for the protesters. I'm so glad they're taking a stand for this because I'm almost sure it's going to get worse if things don't change. I hope that they get a better deal on this and their protest works.
