The U.S. government, good or bad? In this situation, I think bad. An illegal immagrant mother of 3 migrated from Oaxaca to escape the destitution in her village. Cirila Baltazar Cruz speaks only Chatino, which isnt so good when your an illegal immagrant. But not only could she not speak English, she was also pregnant. Last November she gave birth to a baby girl. When she was born, the hospital called the Department of Human Services. They then declared Cruz was not suitable for a baby because she could not speak English and "placed her unborn child in danger and will place the baby in danger in the future."

The baby girl was taken from her mother, which Cruz is now up for deportation so shes now battling if she is deported, she will get to take her daughter with her. The baby was given to a couple and now Cruz's case has been taken up by the Mississippi Immigrants' Rights Alliance and the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center. Mary Bauer, the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center legal director, says that if a mother loses custody of their child because they don't speak a certain language "is a fundamentally outrageous violation of human rights."

The state report called Cruz a prostitute, and said she was "exchanging living arrangements for sex" and planned to put the child up for adoption anyway. The Department of Human Services also said she put the infant in danger because she "had not bought a cradle, clothes or baby formula." The next hearing for Cruz's case is in November where Cruz will try to defend her case and win her daughter over.
