The New Deal was a time in our history where women were starting to have positions in our government. As for the position of a cabinent member, Francis Perkins was the first woman to obtain this important position. She started out as a student at Mount Holyoke College and majored in natural science. Perkins was introduced to social reform efforts by going to lectures during her years of attended college. She accepted a job as a teacher once she was finished with school. Once she was out in the working world, she changed her name from Fannie to Francis so she would be taken more seriously in work.
