Flappers in the Roaring Twenties..

In the twenties a lot of things were changing. Women wanted in on it. Women cut their hair short, started wearing more revealing clothes, they wore makeup, partied all night, and smoked and drank. Just a decade before this would all be totally unexceptable. The new women was able to vote and had a strong attitude. They were Flappers. The word "Flapper" started in Great Britain after the war. It reffered to young women who were still awkward and growing up.The clothing flappers wore were very revealing and shocking. The new dances of the Jazz Age required women to move a lot. They had to wear clothing that weren't too tight, it was usually short, and they had to look good. They left their arms bare and wore silk or rayon stolkings, which were held up by garters. High heels also came into style in the twenties. The look women were going for was called, "garconne," which means "little boy." The trend was to look like a fifteen year old girl, young with no chest. Women would wind cloth around their chest to make it look as flat as possible.

They cut their hair short to extend their boyish look even more. The bob was a popular cut that started in the twenties and is still in style today. For jewelery they wore layers and layers of long beaded necklaces. They wore broaches and rings too. To get the flapper look you had to wear a lot of makeup. Women usually had dark eyes, dark lipstick, tan skin, and blushed cheeks. Before the flapper era pale skin was more attractive but, tanned skin came into style. Women wore blush more too because it wasn't the messy process it used to be to apply.

Women's behavior changed drastically. They went to night clubs a lot and would dance provocatively. Women would snort cocain, which at the time was legal, and they would smoke out of long holders. Flappers dated numerous men at a time. Flappers would drink a lot, which was kind of ironic because this was the time of prohibition. Women started ignoring the traditional roles they used to have. They started looking for jobs outside of the home. The flapper era ended because of the Great Depression and the Wall Street Crash. There simply wasn't a place for women who were flappers anymore. This decade definitely changed women forever. I don't think what flappers did was good but, women became stronger and were maybe respected more after this era.
