In the 1920's, the average American woman began to change. She threw aside all that was thought to be morally wrong from that past and began to, "rebel." Women in America shortened their dresses to above their knees, a length that was once looked upon as completely unacceptable and was a complete change to their once worn ankle-length dresses and skirts. They also began to drink, and she began to smoke. The women cut their hair and they dyed it a jet black. They wore beads and fringy clothing. They started wearing an excessive amount of makeup. They began to party, they began to flirt more openly, and they began to dance new dances, such as the Charleston. These women were referred to as the flappers.
The behavior of women in the 1920's was a drastic change. The women because to drink, smoke cigarettes through long holders, and sniff cocaine. They began common dating, and having "petting parties." They went to jazz clubs and danced provocatively.The flapper entered America by the entertainment industry. It was introduced through the movie by Frances Marion which was entitled, The Flapper. Staring in this movie was Olive Thomas. The image had been seen in previous shows, but the image was paired with the title in this particular movie. The flapper was also said to arise throughout the disdain to athourity during the prohibition era.
There were also the writers at the time that helped make the look popular. There was Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald. Scott wrote that Zelda was the first flapper. They, and many other writers, wrote about the look and the lifestyle. But like every fad, there was always the haters. Dorty Parker was one of the main people of the time who criticized the flappers. There was also people that said that the flappers were said to have the lowest degree of intelligence.
