Notes from presentations:

FBI-  Federal Bureau of Investigation: Headquarters- Washington, D.C, Motto is Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity.  They have 35,104 employees.  Current director in James Comey.  Budget is $8.3 billion.  Part of the United Stares Department of Justice.  Started on July 26, 1908.  Was founded by special agent Theodore Roosevelt.   John Hoover was the first director.  1921-1933- was the lawless years the FBI was not very big yet.  Their powers and responsibility- biggest is to protect the US from terrorists,  Protect the US from foreign intelligence operations.  Protect the US against cyber-based attacks and high technology crimes.   Combat public corruption at all levels and protect civil rights.  Combat transnational organizations and enterprises.  Combat significant violent crime.  Controversies:  Hitler controversy- Hitler escaped the Allied forces and hid in Andes Mountains was heavily guarded, many other top Nazi's joined him and he died at the age of 95 in Brazil.   Supposedly the FBI knew and did not say anything.  J. Edgar Hoover talking to the Mafia and they were saying things to hurting them, so he would give in and not tell others what they would say, covered them for their crimes.

US Secret Service- The headquarters  is 3 blocks from the White House.  Has around 120 field offices in all 50 states.  About 12 offices in foreign countries as well.  About 6,000 people work there.  Guys in the Uniformed Divisions provide protection for the White House and other buildings in Washington.  Special agents are assigned to field operations for a few years before they qualify from personal protection.  Only one agent has died while protecting the president.  Has never has a traitor or spy in its ranks.  The FBI started as part of the SS.  Was part of the Treasury department after 9/11 when the Department of Homeland Security was created the SS was moved to that.  President Lincoln authorized the creation of the SS.  First chief was William P. Wood.  was the first US domestic intelligence and counterintelligence agency but passed job to the FBI.  Leslie Coffelt was the first Secret Service agent to die while protecting the president.  In 1951 Congress permanently authorized the SS to protect the President, Vice President, and others to do with them.  Today the SS continues to protect the president and investigate crimes of fraud and counterfeit.  At first the responsibility was to stop counterfeiting, today two major responsibilities the first is protection.  Protecting the current and past leaders and their immediate families.  Second is to stop financial crimes.  Have not been controversies but a few.  Joe Biden's motorcade was involved in series of accidents.  several agents got in trouble for having "Animal House" type parties through the nights while they were supposed to protecting the First-Family. Several agents were fired when accused of being with prostitutes and drinking all night while supposed to be protecting Obama.
