1.-Causes of the Great Depression

  • stalk market crash of 1929 - people were getting loans but could not pay them back - banks went bankrupt. 
  • people don't have money - don't buy stuff - companies stop making - lay people off - people don't have jobs - less money.
  • overproduction of goods and nobody buying them made stores close because they were loosing money
  • the dust bowl - great plains only got 17 inches of rain and corn was only 70 cents

2.-Impact the Great Depression had on people and our country

  • less marriages and more divorce, there was more crime because of Prohibition and people needing money
  • the suicide rate was up a lot, schools were under funded and the dropout rate was really high.
  • there was train jumping to get from city to city for free, soup kitchens were popular because it was free food.
  • hoovervilles where homeless people lived outside of big cities, they disliked hoover thats why they named it after him.
  • People had gardens where they would grow anything they could get their hands on, and if you had a cow u were lucky.
  • most people used trading instead of paper money, 

3.-President Hoover’s attempt(or lack thereof) to help solve Great Depression

  • Ag marketing act tried to keep crop prices from rising and tried to help finance farmers.
  • tried to give money to comporations to make more money 

4.-1932/1936 Presidential elections

  • 1932 election was F.D.R (D) vs Hoover (R) people hated hoover because they blamed the depression on him
  • 3rd parties started to come around at this time
  • FDR won 89% to 11%  he wanted to create jobs and government help, regulate banks, and make more government spending
  • hoover wanted to raise taxes and spend more, also raise terrifs and block trade
  • red did not like him because he wanted to use to much money

  • 1936 election was Alf Landon (R) and FDR (D) and it was a huge landslid in FDRs favor
  • FDR wanted more police to stop the crime, he wanted to make opportunity for all people, and start Aid programs
  • He wanted social security, and to also help the veterans and farmers
  • Alf wanted less spending, and wanted to get rid of new deal.

5.-Bonus Army

  • it was about 43,000 veterans who wanted a bonus to help their financial state. 
  • they wanted $1 to $1.25 for every day served in the military.
  • when the bill didn't pass hoover sent the military to escort them out.
  • they couldn't get money until 1945 but wanted it early to help them with the depression.
  • Dwight D Eisenhower was a leader of the military and wasn't suppose to follow them to the camp.

6.-Entertainment, sports, music, radio, movies and fads

  • green bay beat the giants in the Superbowl but it wasn't called the Superbowl yet. 
  • Jesse Owens ( famous track and field medalist) Lou Gehrig ( first baseman for the NY Yankees).
  • jazz music was popular, Shirley temple, Roy rogers, and Bing Crosby.
  • Most households owned radios but the rural areas not many people had radios.
  • Popeye was a famous cartoon, college kids swallowed gold fish.

7.-Franklin Roosevelt’s background and accomplishments-Focus on New Deal

  • FDR was born into a rich family, went to Harvard but never got a degree because he said it was boring so he left and went to politics.
  • he ran as a (D) for new your senate and formed an alliance with Lewis Howe his political adviser.
  • he wanted to run for senate but her lacked white house support and made to many enemies so he lost.
  • he made the hoover dam, passed the new deal, the work progress administration, and made jobs that way.
  • he also payed farmers so they could still make crops.

8.-The Three R’s

  • government gave money and food out to help people and they wanted to get buisnesses going again

9.-The difference between the First New Deal and Second New Deal

  • he started to poor money into companties to try to get them going again

10.-Fireside chats

  • FDR gave speeches giving people advice on what to do and how to get money.
  • Talked over the radio and talked to the public.
  • It gave Americans hope and made people feel like he was talking directly to them.

11.-The Hundred Days

  • Beginning of the presidency and it ended the great depression
  • put 250,000 men to work and passed the new deals
  • trump is trying to ban people from the middle east and try to get illegals out of the country

12.-Deficit spending and “priming the pump”

  • pooring money into society and he;ping people by giving big companies buisness.

13.-FDR vs the US Supreme Court-Court Packing issue

  • Wanted to get rid of the supreme courts unfavorable rulings 
  • he targeted to get rid of 6/9 of the supreme court justices because they were stopping progress
  • he wanted 15 justices instead of 9 and wanted new justices to balance out the opinion and wanted young people because the old justices were old and had different views.
  • Didn't like the NIRA and put new control on oil and production pricing

14.-Critics and failings of the New Deal-Long, Caughlin, Townshend

  • he wanted to make government projects for workers 
  • Caughlin was a radio priest but he was predigest and blamed Jews for the depression
  • he didn't believe in govnt programs
