Constitution
The supreme law of the United States.
It is the foundation and source of the legal authority.
Articles of Confederation- set up the structure of the US Government after Revolutionary War.
Basic Principals
Popular Sovereignty- Government power resides in the people.
Limited Government- Government is not all powerful can only do what the people let it.
Separation of Powers- Helps prevent one branch from becoming to powerful.
Federation- Division of power among national and state governments.
James Madison wrote the Constitution.
Friday- Judicial Branch
Supreme Court judges serve for life unless impeached.
Judicial power rests with US Supreme Court and other courts created by Congress.
Important Powers:
Decides cases of Constitutional law and federal law.
Cases following ambassadors go straight to Supreme Court.
Judicial Review come later (1803- Marbury vs. Madison).
Citizenship- Citizens of each state are entitled to the same privileges as citizens of every state.
Extradition- A person charged in any state, who flees from justice to another state, must be returned.
Admission- New States may be admitted into the union by Congress, but NOT within the jurisdiction of another state or two states combining without consent of all involved.
Guarantees to States- The United States Guarantees to State a republican form of government, protection against invasion ad domestic (internal) rebellion.
