Book of laws on how to govern our country. United States wasn't happy with Britain so they split apart. Separation of Powers- Breaks our government into branches. Checks and Balance- Congress can pass laws. "Father of the Constitution" - James Madison. Two Houses of Congress- Senate, House of Representatives. 2 senators per state. 100 senators total. 425 people in House of Representatives. Length of term/age requirement- House: 2 years. Must be 25 to be in the house. 30 to be in the senate. Powers- Declare war, make/pass laws. 35 to be president. President can't serve more than 10 years. Franklin D. Roosevelt served the longest term. Served for 12 years. Powers of President- Veto/sign laws, Commander in Chief or military.
Supreme Court- No requirements for being in the Supreme Court. How do they get their job? They get appointed by president. How do they lose their job? They retire, impeached, die. Powers- Interpret jaws of the constitution. Current Chief Justice- John Roberts
