February 16-20

Monday - We practiced the Caribbean Islands today. The class quiz over these islands is tomorrow. The overall test over Latin America will early next week. (I was gone today and got notes off of CWI page and bored some from Mikala Kenkel)

Capitalism

  • An economic system that has private ownership of production, not owned by the government
  • USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico, and Ireland.
  • People that are born into poverty have a harder time getting out of poverty. 

Socialism

  •  a political and economic system
  • Everyone is more equal, nobody owns anything but, everyone owns everything
  • China, Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, and the Soviet Union
  • A lot of countries that use socialism had the worst dictators.
  • Education system is socialism

Oligarchy

  • Government that is run by a group of people
  • Russia, India, United States, Britain, and China.

Mixed Economy 

  • A mixture of capitalism and socialism; an economic system combining private and public enterprise
  • United Kingdom, Cuba, United States, France, and Russia.

Practice of Communism 

  • Everything is controlled and ran by the government
  • People don't have the freedom of speech etc.
  • Laos, Cuba, China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Soviet Union.
  • The Soviet Union was the first communism country.

Theory of communism

  • Every business is owned by the public and everything is equal
  • Karl Marx came up with Communism
  • There wasn't any examples of any countries  

 

Tuesday - We took our Caribbean Islands test. Monday we are going to do the South America map class test Monday. 

ISIS 

  • ISIS spreads to Africa
  • We still aren't sending combat troops
  • Not sure of what ISIS wants 
  • Continues to attack Europe 
  • Gunman opened up on crowd
  • Killed people
  • Shooter was killed by police
  • It was a cartoonist he went after
  • They make fun of Prophet Muhammad
  • Looks to be a lone wolf terrorist attack

Fragile States 

  • Previously none as Failed States
  • Usually found in Africa and Middle East
  • States create a way to oppress their people
  • Benefits the elites leaving society in poverty
  • 10 Reasons
    • Lack of Property Rights (North Korea)
      • People share property
      • Government own land
      • Agriculture organized by collective farms
    • Forced Labor (Uzbekistan)
      • Children forced to do labor
      • Quotas given
      • Less education for children
      • Society in poverty
      • Only rich benefit
    • Tilted Playing Field (South Africa)
      • White people got good jobs
      • Blacks had horrible jobs
      • They had low wages
      • Weren't given chance to show skills
    • Big Men get Greedy (Egypt)

    • Elites block New Technology (Austria and Russia)

      • Then started taking back political rights
    • Fighting over the Spoils (Seirra Leone)
      • Creates competition between parties
      • Creates civil war
      • Government completely collapsed
      • Little resources 
      • People fight over sources

Wednesday - We continued on the Fragile States today and went over part of the South America map. I added my information to the information from Tuesday.

Thursday - We are learning about Ukraine and Russia. We also went over map, I really need to study.

    • Major Ethnic Groups: Ukranian (77.8%) and Russian (17.3%)
    • Per Capita Income: $7,400
    • Official language Ukrainian
    • Population: 44 million
  • History
    • Territory was ruled by  different powers
      • Lithuania
      • Poland
      • Ottoman Empire
      • Austria-Hungary
      • Russia
    • During WW1 part of Ukraine fought for Austria-Hungary and other side fought on Russian side
    • After WW1 because part of Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1922
    • 1991 Ukraine became independent when Soviet Union fell
    • Has had numerous issues with Russia

Friday - NO SCHOOL!!!!!!!
