Tuesday- World War 2 Alliances 

  • Alliances
    • Axis Powers
      • Rome Germany and Italy were going to be the most influential areas of the world
      • GERMANY, JAPAN, ITALY 
      • Germany was stripped of all its powers from WWI
    • Allied Powers
      • GREAT BRITAIN, FRANCE, UNITED STATES, SOVIET UNION, FRANCE (part of France was taken over in WWI)

Wednesday- Notes

  • Treaty if Versailles
    • Ended WWI
    • Took land away from Germany (France wanted to punish Germany)
    • Lost over seas colonies
      • Later Hitler took over the countries that took land away(France, Belgium, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Poland)
      • Germany invaded Poland in 1939 that started WWII and Soviet Union also invaded Poland the same day
    • Limited Germany's military
      • 100,000 but trained and then released and got another 100,000
      • No tanks, Air Force, demilitarized areas without weapons
    • Financial loss for Germany
      • Had to pay $33 billion to Allies (GB/France) 
    • Had to admit full responsibility of starting war "War Guilt Clause"
    • A League of Nations was set up to keep world peace
  • 1920's and 1930's Peace Attempts
    • League of Nations
      • Worldwide peace keeping organization
      • Countries get together and talk about problems instead of war
      • Weakness
        • 1.) Approving rules- all countries couldn't agree on things
        • 2.) United States didn't join- Woodrow Wilson brought it up and didn't join (didn't want to get involved)
        • 3.) Didn't have a military force- couldn't physically stop countries starting war and taking over
  • 4 Power Pact
    • Treaty signed by US, GB, France, and Japan at the Washington Naval Conference in 1921
      • Countries agreed to respect possessions in the Pacific and not seek further territory 
  • 5 Power Pact
    • GB, US, Japan, France, Italy
      • Designed to prevent army's race
      • Limited construction of battleships and aircraft carriers 
      • did not restrict cruisers or submarines 
  • 9 Power Pact
    • Guaranteed Chinese independence and upheld the Open Door Policy
      • signed by US, Japan, China, France, GB, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal
  • Kellogg-Briand Pact
    • Countries that agreed to not go to war to settle disputes
      • 65 countries signed it
  •  London Naval Conference-1931
    • Concerned with the agreements reached in Washington Naval Conference
    • The UK, USA, France, Italy, and Japan attended
    • All five agreed to extend the 5 Power Pact (tighter control of warfare weapons/ construction) 
  • Impact of the Great Depression on War
    • Caused World trade to go down
    • People gave more respect to radical leaders (like Hitler) because the hate their own government
    • Japan was very dependent on US trade (which had slowed down)
      • China was Japan's resource after US stopped trading
