Monday - 

    • Anyone could have ran against Hoover and easily have won
  • 1936 Election
    • FDR(D) Incumbent vs. Landon(R)
  • Court Packing Bill
    • FDR didn't like the fact that they were old and most were conservative republicans
    • a couple times the court shot down New Deals (called them unconstitutional
    • Supreme Court Packing - packing the supreme court with democrats (his own guy)
      • one new justice for the guys over the age of 70
      • 6 new democrats

Tuesday - No school.

Wednesday - No School.

Thursday - 

  • Bonus Army
      • People walked into DC wanting money
      • Promised money but wouldn't get it until 1945
        • 1.25 for every day they served
      • Looking for their bonus checks
      • Peacefull rally
      • Congress was debating on whether or not to give it to them early
        • this was during the 2nd worst year of the Great Depression
      • At first, the people were treated good
      • Congress did not give it to them early
      • Some stayed behind and were more aggressive
      • Hoover orders military in (used gas and whatnot)
      • Sad because it was former military members who wanted money to put food on the table
    • Macarthur, Eisenhower, Patton
      • famous WW2 generals
      • all involved in the Bonus Army issue
      • Macarthur used tear gas and whatnot
      • Hoover supported Macarthur
      • Eisenhower later wrote/criticized Macarthur because he treated the veterans wrongly
  • The 3 Rs
    • Relief for the needy
    • Economic recovery
    • Financial reform
  • Fireside Chats
    • FDR - gave dozens
    • Radio addresses that he gave from time to time
    • It made it seem he was talking directly to you
    • After the banks closed, he got on the radio and explained what he was going to do
  • Deficit Spending and Priming the Pump
    • spending more money than you make
    • priming the pump was putting a lot of money into the economy to prime it
  • What were some of the reasons the New Deal was challanged?
    • Created a very powerful president that led Congress, this was a violation of checks and balances
    • It was a radical departure from Laissez-faire ideas. Created a "big government"
    • Some acts appeared interfering and at worst inconstitutional
    • Hevy debt burden - the US was engage in deficit spending and this was unhealthy for the economy in the long run
  • FDR
    • Got involved in government young
    • Ran for VP in 1923 with James Cox
      • lost the war to Harding
    • Got polio in the early 20s, which put a halt to his career
      • Confined to a wheel-chair
      • Only physically handicapped president anywhere
    • Died a month into his 4th term - right before the end of WW2
  • Senator Huey Long
    • he literally wanted to take land and money from the rich and redistrubute to the poor
    • said FDR wasn't doing enough
    • killed by Carl Weiss in 1935
    • Platform: "Share-Our-Wealth"
  • New Deal vs. The 2nd New Deal
    • New Deal:
      • Restore a nation's hope
      • Help banks and stock market
      • Provide jobs and relief for the poor
      • Plan and regulate economy
    • 2nd New Deal:
      • Pass new labor laws
      • Create and expand New Deal agencies
      • Establish Social Security for older people and unemployed
