feb 24 we went over mr bruns presentation. Italy was mad about the treaty os Versailles because they wanted more land. They joined the league of nations between 1919 until 1937. the 5 power pack had Italy, GB, US, Japan, and France. designed to prevent arm's race. limited const of battleships, battle cruisers and subs. didn't restrict cruisers and etc. 9 power guaranteed Chinese independence in open door policy- free trade rights with china. King Victor Emmanuel asked Mussolini to take power to keep communists out. Benito Mussolini came to power in 1922. He didn't believe in war until ww1. 4 years later, he was the leader of Italy. He established Fascism in Italy. Led by a strong dictator, stresses nationalism, imperialism, and militarism. uses intimidation. Kellogg-Briand Pact- countries pledged not to use war to settle disputes. Italy was part of. Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1936. Italy lost it's Ethiopia Colony in 1896 one of the worst colonial disasters. League of nations sent sanctions on Italy and they dropped out. in 1936 FDR signed neutrality act so they dont trade with warring nations. Spanish Civil War in 1936 sent troops from Hitler and Mussolini to battle and they defeat communists. The Rome-Berlin Axis is signed in 1936 and they form alliance.Tripartite Pact is signed in 40 to from Axis powers with Japan. Others involved were Albania, Bulgaria, Finland, Romania, Thailand, and Hungary. Italy wanted to create roman empire again. Italy easily took over Albania in 1940. then they went to Greece, in which Hitler had to bail him out. Next, they went to Mediterranean and North Africa. within 10 months of us invation, troops in africa surrender. Italy was defeated in 43. Itlay lost because they are too weak and un prepared. there troops were spread and thin. 410,00- 330,00 military death. spent 94 billion, didnt become comunist. us gave money to help. became in NATO and Un
