Feb 23 & 24- Notes on Italy.
-Major events that impacted their country between WWI and WWII. Treaty of Versailles. They wanted more land. Mussolini's rise to power. Restoring Roman Empire. 5 Power Pact, signed by Britain, the US, Japan, France, and Italy. It limited arm's race. 9 Power Pact guaranteed Chinese independence and upheld the Open Door Policy (all countries that signed it would have free trading rights with China). Rome-Berlin Axis
-Discuss basic facts: alliance, total casualties, total cost, war goals, etc Axis Powers. Goal: Very similar to Germany, wanted world power, "recreate the Roman Empire", allied with Germany. Make the Mediterranean an "Italian Lake". Main powers: Germany, Italy, Japan. Italy Invasion of Albania (won that war).
-Tell us about their leader(s) during WWII Mussolini and Emmanuel
-background Mussolini formed fascist group. Emmanuel was king. He asked Mussolini to take over power in Italy to keep the communists out of Italy. Fascism was a government led by a strong dictator. Stresses strong nationalism, militarism, and imperialism. Uses intimidation to get what they wanted.
-how they came to power Mussolini became Prime Minister. Emmanuel was king because of family.
-how they lost power Mussolini voted out of his own Grand Council. Emmanuel went into exile.
-Discuss the impact of their Homefront and propaganda and what it was like in their country during the war Laborers lowered. Everyone not in the war worked. Daily bombings. Propaganda. Anti British and Western. Pro Germany. Nationalism.
-Discuss major battle strategies Fascism. Didn't want to fight a two front war. Too ambitious. Aided Germany in most affairs
-Discuss major battles that the country was involved in African Campaign. Battle of Britain. Invasion of France. The Mediterranean. Eastern Front. The Atlantic.
-Discuss other people/generals from their country in WWII that had a major impact on the war Mussolini allied with Germany and wanted to be like Hitler. Pietro Badoglio replaced Mussolini and was the first Prime Minister of Non Fascist government. He also signed armistice with allies. Arturo Riccardi was chief of staff of the navy and stepped down with Mussolini. Vittorio Ambrosio was the Italian army chief of staff and told Mussolini to get out of war. Allies did not trust him.
-Discuss why they won or lost the war Fascist Italy weren't ready for war. Forced into war. Small, weak army.
-Discuss the impact WWII had on the country After Mussolini was killed Pietro Badoglio signed an Armistice with the Allies. A month after signing the armistice, Italy declared war on Germany, along with the allies. Italy provided the allies more troops. Many deaths. Spent a lot of money. Joined the United Nations.
