  • Passed a bill in the early 20’s that promised WWI vets a pension

  • Wasn’t supposed to be received until 1945

  • Vets marched in DC

  • Tried to get congress to vote in their favor

  • Wasn’t passed

  • The vets that stayed protested

  • Hoover called in the military to end the revolt nonviolently

  • MacArthur used teargas and aggressive methods

  • Eisenhower didn’t like MacArthur’s aggressiveness

  • Made Hoover look un-caring

  • First New Deal

    • Restore Nation’s hope

    • Help banks and stock market

    • Provide jobs and relief for poor

    • Plan and regulate the economy

    • Pass new labor laws

    • Create and expand New Deal agencies

    • Establish Social Security for older people and unemployed

  • Roosevelt’s first 100 days as president

  • He wanted people to like him

  • Tried to do as much as possible

  • Gov. spends more than it takes in

  • If we are trying to get back on track we have to start spending money

  • Priming the pump- putting money into the economy

  • Wasted money

  • Did a lot of positive things but as soon as the money was taken away, the economy went down again

13.-FDR vs the US Supreme Court-Court Packing issue

  • Roosevelt was unhappy with 9 men, justices

  • 6 men were striking down New Deal programs

  • Wanted to appoint one justice for every one over seventy

  • People thought he was trying to upset the checks and balance system

  • Bill didn’t happen

14.-Critics and failings of the New Deal-Long, Caughlin, Townshend

  • Reasons the Deal was challenged:

    • Created a very powerful president that led Congress, this was a violation of checks and balances

    • It was a radical departure from Laissez Faire ideals. Created “Big Government”

    • Some acts appeared interfering and at worst unconstitutional

    • Heavy debt burden- the US was engaged in deficit spending and this was unhealthy for the economy in the long run

  • There were people complaining he was doing too much and too little

  • Long Caughlin and Townshend thought Roosevelt wasn’t doing enough

  • Long said take from the rich and give to the poor

  • Shot and killed

  • Gathering wide support because of the tough times
