The Electoral Collenge System is the proccess that we use to elect the president  and vice president of the United States. The states apoints electors. They are most of the time very powerful people in government. There are 6 in Iowa. They are supposed to vote off of the people's votes. Popular vote matters most in state election. If you win the states popular vote you win their electoral votes. There are a couple states that's based on precents. If you win 60% of the popular vote you win 60% of the electorals. There are 538 electors in total. They get the number from congress 455, senators 100, and 3 from Washington Dc. A lot of people have a problem with the popular vote not determining the president. It's better for small states because they don't have very big population of people who can vote. In a close election those states count. Swing states are states that switch between Republican and Democratic. A Democrate state is called a blue state and a Republican state is called a red state. The number in order for the president to win is 270 electoral votes. Officially we don't know the outcome of the election until the electors vote. Theres nothing in the constitution that says you have to vote for the popular vote. They're called faithless electors. This is aloud incase the masses are stupid and chose the wrong canidite. That was more back in the 1800s. If it was by popular vote they canidates would focus more on swing states. With the electoral votes you'd go to the big states and practically everywhere because it all matters. The first time someone lost the popular vote and became president anyway was back in 1824. The next one was in 1876, then 1888, then 2000, then the last one in 2016.
