Failed States

A failed state is a term that describes a state that has failed. More specifically, it's a gov't that has failed at the basic responsibilities and conditions of a gov't. Four key items are generally used to describe a failed state, and they are:- Being unable to control its land,- loss of authority that can make decisions,- being unable to provide public resources, and- not being able to interact with other states.A failed state can happen suddenly, like after a war, or insurgent takeover. It can happen slowly, and work it's way closer and closer to a failed state if it doesn't get reversed. That is very true. You don't realize what's happening until it's too late.A country gets a new leader. This leader happens to be somewhat corrupt. He withholds public resources and goes to war. The country rips itself apart, and the leaders fall back to major cities, while people rule the country, whether they be good, or, most likely, bad. I think this can happen to any country, if the conditions are right. What happens when a country starts to fall apart? The leader looks for the easiest way out, even if it might hurt everyone. At both ends of the natural resource chain, a failing nation can exist. I myself didn't think it could happen in a country rich in resources, but it makes sense now. A country with bad soil, little water, and almost nothing else is likely to fall apart. So is a country that is rich in resources. Competition sparks, people get greedy, and use whatever ways they can to get their hands on what they want.It is very tough to determine whether or not a country will fail, but like the article says, which I believe to be very true, the way to determine if a country is going to fail is to look in the eyes of the people and see if there's happiness. Or not.Somalia is a country that is falling apart. Well, a better way to put it is that it has already fallen apart. Groups of people fight the militia everyday, bombs go off, people die. It would not be a pleasant place to live. But among all the pain, the suffering, the doubt, some hold hope. People are waiting for a stable gov't to come in and fix their country, and I believe with the proper amount of cooperation, and a big ol' miracle, Somalia can be sewn back together. I think Somalia can come back together, but like every other human being, I have my doubts. All the Somali people can do is hope.
