A failed state is when a country feels deserted. It begins after a fatal event, such as a civil war, natural disaster, or brutal takeover. They say it's just like cancer eating away at a country. They are not only a danger to themselves but a threat to the whole world as well. When a country starts to fail, that country thinks that any way is a good way out, so they are not afraid of terrorism or any criminal activity. Geography of your country plays a part in this as well. If your neighboring countries are failing, you become a target for them to make themselves feel good about themselves. The historical and culture tensions within the countries can also play a factor in failing. This is because they do not have the same beliefs, values or way of life so this causes tension between them. Every country goes through a difficult time at some time. What might seem like a stable country now, may experience a failed state in the future, and in the past there have been failed states that are now stable. For two years, Somalia has been ranked number one for failed states. Because there is no governement (anarchy), it has become a place where pirates and terrorists rule. People who live there do not know what a stable republic is but they do know what M16's, bazookas, mortars and grenades sound like. Somalia has become a popular place for terrorists to come and fight a global jihad (a holy war waged on behalf of Islam). People in Somalia are leaving (either going to refugee camps or to "holding camps"). I would want to go to a refugee camp! But many people have decided to stay in the city of Mogadishu; it has been called "ground-zero" for the failed state of Somalia.Five main families (referred to as the Clan families) held Somalis together but when the Eurepeans began arriving in the country, troubles began. In 1991, the civil war between rival militias errupted. Even today, innocent people are still being killed. The milita groups overtake the harvest and crops, and pirates steal the food from the ships which leaves little food for the Somalians. Millions depend on food aid. While standing in line waiting for their food, violence breaks out between the hungry people. Violence and killing are still happening on a daily basis. I am so glad I don't live there!!
