A failed state basically means the state hasn't met the standards that the government has set for them. A state has "failed" if they aren't communicating with other states, talking publicly, and are losing the authority of making decisions. It's basically anarchy, no police, fireman, regular things that normal government have. The article on Failing Nations is saying that lots of Nations are failed only because of their geographic standpoint and historic tensions. Syria has been badly put at risk for being so close to Iraq. Refugees have poured into Syria for hardly reason at all. I don't think it's fair to surrounding countries of Iraq to be punished for only being geographically by Iraq. Countries with diamonds and rich soil can be put at risk also for failure to of controlling these resources.Africa has been high on the Failed State Index for a long time. Senegal is one of the only countries in Africa that has benefited from the government. The U.S. often forgets that our country also was on a rocky road filled with the civil war and just chaos. We need to remember that a failed state won't change overnight and it's not always their fault. The people who live in these countries are the ones suffering most. If a country hasn't changed in their eyes, than it hasn't changed at all.
The Second article, Shattered Somalia, is about an eighteen year old boy named Mohammed from Somalia that is a fisherman. Mohammed is the money maker of the family, he is the only one able to provide. His dad would help him but he could not work because of a mortar blast. As a father, I'd feel like I let my family down. It would just make me feel horrible. Mohammed has lived all 18 years of his life living in a government of anarchy and chaos. He was born as the Somalian President was thrown overboard. Mohammed has never experienced a stable government, only chaos and war.Mohammed cannot go to school because he doesn't have the money to attend. While Mohammed could attend school, he'd only sit in the classroom thinking about a close friend that was killed by a mortar. They asked him if he can remember any good memories from childhood, he can't think of any. So basically, the government ruined any normal childhood he could of had. It's horrible that someone else's death caused an innocent child to not have a normal childhood.Somalia is just not safe. One experience was a group of reporters wanted to go to a different city and paid for a few people to take them. Another pair of people did this, also. But the pair wasn't so fortunate and got kidnapped. The ransom maybe up to a million dollars. Could you imagine anything like that happening in the U.S? Eh, didn't thinks so, and if it did it would probably be a pretty big deal.Mohammed could have chose to be in al Shabaab, a terrorist group, and be paid $150 a month, more than twice he makes a month already. He hasn't said that he has wanted to do this, but...he hasn't said no either.
