Extra Credit Blog- Tom Mulligan as Grant Woods

On Saturday October 10, 2009, I attending the Harlan Community Library where Tom Mulligan renacted the life of Grant Woods. (1891-1942)I think Mulligan did a very good job at playing the role of Grant Woods. He never lost track of where he was at, he never repeated himself, he knew all of his information very well, and put great visuals into your mind.. The way he talked, and described every little thing. it made me feel as if i was actuall ythere. When he talked ab0ut the smell of bread fresh out of the oven the way his mother used to make it when he was a boy, i smelt nothing butt warm bread and fresh margerine. When he talked about when he was litle and he would have to hind under the table when his dad came home and found him painting. i pictured a scared little boy under the kitchen table terrified to come out, as his dad would yell and beat him for the beautifil artwork he created and loved. He talked a lot about Wood's history of education, and as you;ll notice, there was a simlarity in every school he attended. When Wood;s was in high school, he dropped out and attended a night school to study art. Well he dropped out of night schoo kand left the city at a young age. He started an incredible art school in chicago, and again, he decided to drop out. But whats funny about that, is that he never enrolled in Chicago. haha! As he was sitting at home one night, he realized it had been six years since high school and he had been no where. His life has gone no where, and he needed to figure something out. With all the money problems he had, he couldnt affort to stay enrolled into a good school. He found a junior high school that needed an art teacher, and took the job. He tought ninth grade boys all the art techniques they needed to know, and got paid $900.00, . After he had finally gotten enough money, he dicided he wazs going to pursue his dream and go to Europe, specifically Paris. He had wanted to go here beacuse of al the famous artists who have became famous from Paris. There, he attended Julian;s Academy. At that he failed himself, and again dropped out. He was an impressionist, so he followed a certain way of painting, which is a few reasons why it was was hard for him to keep a teaching job and in school. While he was on his break after Julian Academy, he went back home and remodeled a place for him and his mother to live, which is known as the Grant Wood's Studio. He had decided to quit teaching to paint full time, and try on focus on becoming a better artist. Monic, Germany was a very popular place for artists. There were artists known worldwide from Monic, and Woods thought that if they could do it there, he could too. Well his trip to Germany wasnt quite what he had expected. It had actually changed his artistic view on ev erything he had ever done,. and will create in the future. This journey is why he came up with one of his famous quotes "Because the usualist things are the best", He had learned a lot from this journey, which had inspired him as wella s changed him.. His first famous painting, 'Woman With Plants', had changed his carreer, and "Gothic" changed his life. 'Daughter's of Revolution' was also one of his famous paintings people traveled from all over to see.He had tought summer art classes in Stone City for two summers, and taught art classes full time at a university.. After a while, the university put him down in everyway possible because the Headmaster didnt like they way he taught, which was freely, and was fired. His mother soom became very sick and past away., After this, he gave up painting and tried to write a book.. Again, he failed.. He was now described as 'uprooted' and became an observer again..Later on, he had met a girl and later down the road, married his wife Sarah. They threw parties with all the famous people he didnt even know at this mansion, wtih cooks and maids and butlers.. As time passed, Grant had figured oout Sarah had been steeling money from him all this time and kicked her out, fired all houseworker, except the maid. He then had the kind of parties he had enjoyed, with a bunch of men sitting aroud playing cards, the maid joining, dressed in casual clothes, never the 'stupid uniform' Sarah had made her wear. After Sarah had left, he had starting painting again., and now they were back on track..
