In 2001 two planes crashed into New York’s twin towers which killed 2,752 people. This was a big disaster and is remembered on September 11 every year. It is known as 9/11. It was the first major terrorist attack that took place on U.S soil.
In 2002 the United States invaded Afghanistan which escalated the process of the war. This was a huge event.In 2003 the space shuttle Columbia blew up while reentering Earth and killed the 7 astronauts on board.
In 2006 the former president of Iraq, Saddam Hussien, was sentenced to death for the role in the massacre of 148 Shi’as in 1982. His co-defendants Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti and Award Hamed al-Bandar were also sentenced to death.In 2004 there was a major earthquake at a magnitude of 9.3. It took place around the coast of the Indian Ocean causing a tsunami which killed around 230,000 people. This was a major event that caused thousands of people their lives and homes.
In 2007 Sidir hit Bangladesh, a cyclone, destroyed Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, and killed about 5,000 people.In 2005 the team of Michael E. Brown, Chad Trujillo, and David L. Rabinowitz discovered a new dwarf planet. Thisdwarf planet is the largest known dwarf planet in our solar system. This new dwarf planet is called Eris.
In 2009 Captain Richard Phillips was rescued from a lifeboat by the U.S Navy. He was being held hostage by Somali pirates. The U.S Navy killed three of the pirates. They also captured a fourth pirate.In 2008 Barack Obama was elected President of the United States. He is the first African American to become President of the United States.
