In the election of the 1956 the democratic party was Adlai Stevenson from Illinois. His running mate was Estes Kefauver. For the republicans was Dwight Eisenhower for New York. Hiis running mate was Richard Nixion. Eisenhower won 457 electoral votes winning 41 states. Stevenson won 73 votes winning 7 states. Eisenhower won pretty much because he got the female vote. Stevenson wanted to increase government spending and treaties with the Soviets.He also wanted to put an end to the military draft and make it voluntary enlistment. Eisenhower publicly disliked these ideas but in private he was working to ban nuclear testing. Eisenhower helped the Brown vs. Board of Education case. This ended legal segragtion in schools. As a result Eisenhower won almost 40 percent of the black votes. He was the last Republican canidate to recieve that high of a black vote. Eisenhower got Louisiana which made him the first Republican canidate to take the state since 1876.
