Not untill 1840s did a organized school system exist. Education reformers like Horace Mann and Henry Barnard created state-wide school systems. These reformers tried to get increase oppertunities for all children, and create bonds between highly diverse cultures. They also said school could keep crime and poverty down.School advocates started free elementries so everyone could go. By 1918 there were laws placed in most states that stated all elementary aged children had to go to school. In 1833 Truman and Smith Publishing approached William Holmes McGuffey asking him to write a school text book for them to sell. By 1841 McGuffey published his first book Eclectic Readers. The schools focused on a practical curriculum with college preparatory classes.I think that it was really weird that they had one classroom with kids in grade 0 through 12. I really don`t understand that because how do they teach all those kids at the same time because they are all at different levels.
I was in a clasroom that had two grades at the same time and the teacher just takes turns with each class. It wiould be hard to imagine 12 different clases though
