This week, I'm doing my story on a happy story. After 14 months, Sabi the black lab gets to return home after her extended stay in Afghanistan. She is a bomb-sniffing dog from Australia, but had been lost in a battle between Australian soldiers and militant fighters. When the battle was all said and done, the dog was no where to be found. They looked for Sabi for months after, but they couldn't find her. This past week she was returned to the Australians' base. I think it's incredible that the dog was still living and in good health.Sabi was found by an American soldier in Uruzgan at an isolated patrol base. She was then brought to the Australian base where she was welcomed by the prime minister of Australia and a U.S. commander. (below)
The dog has to be checked for disease before they can make the decision if they want to send her home to Australia. I hope that she does get to go home after she has been among unfamiliar people for over a year. There are more dogs like Sabi, about 1,500 that are trained to sniff our bombs and other explosives that could potentially hurt soldiers. It is incredible what those animals do and i'm happy that we have such good dogs that can save lives. The dog appears to be in good shape though, which means someone has probably been looking after her. I'm glad that even though there are a lot of bad things and people in this world that you can have enough trust in people to not injure and give care to an innocent dog. (: I know if my puppy was ever lost I hope that someone would take care of him.
