There has been a recent study done by an evolutionary psychologist on the possibility that being an atheist and an atheist may mean that you have a higher IQ than the average person.yes""> The professor who conducted this study has correlated dataand is planning on publishing an article on this topic in the March issue ofSocial Psychology Quarterly. The study found that the results werestatistically significant, anywhere from 6 to 11 points above average.
The study found that most adolescents and adults who said they were either liberals or atheists had higher IQs than those who were conservative or religious. Psychologists say that this may be because though we are consideredevolved, the mindset of our early ancestors is still with us. They acted in ways to best insure theirsurvival, and today we still to some degree act the same way.
The idea of religion is one of the reasons that humans as a species are paranoid. That paranoia helps us to be prepared for danger when we saw signs on the horizon,or needed an explanation for the unexplainable.yes""> Being an atheist goes against the “rational” thinking ofmany and can be conceived as a higher level of thought. Other studies have also equatedvegetarianism to higher IQs to some degree.yes""> The idea of eating only vegetables goes against our bodily needfor certain vitamins and thinking process of animals=meat=good tastingfood. It also goes against thesubconscious thought that the more animals you could kill or the more meat youcould get for your family showed your dominance and superiority overothers. Being liberal means thatyou are focused and concerned about those close to you and totalstrangers. Our ancestors valuedand prided themselves on their families and close kin, so the idea of caringabout strangers is a relatively higher level of thinking.
I think this kind of makes sense because if you look at how advanced some of our ways of thinking and doing things compared to those of our ancestors, it makes sense that different levels of thinking and awareness wouldequate to intelligence. On theother hand I think some of our ways of thinking have decreased. Today we focus more on technology thanon communicating with other people in person, as well as our family lives. People today may think more aboutstrangers but we tend to spend less time with family, friends, or strangers andmore time on ourselves and our various activities.
