Democratic and Republican Veiws (research)

Mr. Bruns assigned us the task of researching the Democratic veiw on a large amount of issues that will be listed and explained further on in the contents of this article. These issues have been the topic of debate for years, their meaning changing in only the smallest of degrees, their effect on the American people still massive and controversial. However, my group, being overpowered by the psychotic overachiever that is I, also volunteered to research the Republican veiw alongside the aforementioned Democratic view.-abortion- The first topic of abortion can be generalized into two groups; prolife and prochoice. Generally speaking, because every person's veiw is differant and doesn't nessesarily align with the party they claim loyalty to, the democratic and republican parties can be associated with one or the other. The democratic party is mainly associated with the prochoice group, believing that abortion is a difficut moral and legal issue, but should remain entirely legal. They maintain that it is the choice of the mother, and support it through the 6 month mark. After that, certain states can choose to make it legal or illegal. On the opposing side, Republicans generally disapprove of abortion, believing it to be immoral and an example of murder. Most republicans would rather see Roe V. Wade overturned, and abortion made illegal. They generally believe that regardless of the health of the mother, abortion should never be utilized. To them, it is wrong, and it robs a chance at life from an innocent child.-flag burning- The second issue of flag burning, though not extremely pressing to the nation at the present time, is also debatable among Democrats and Republicans. On the Democratic side of things, free speach or freedom of expression is upheld in the utmost importance compared to the flag. They can generally be found supporting the American right to protest and express themselves however they choose. Therefore, they do not support the illegality of the act, but rather believe that it is an issue of frredom of expression. However, the Republican Party is shown to believe that the desecration of American symbols should be illegal. In the senate, the party fought to make it such, yet it narrowly failed. Currently, it is still legal, but the Republican party demands respect for the symbols that the country is founded on and is so proud of.-gun control- The republican party strongly believes in the induvidual right to own and carry fire arms, as the second amendmant so clearly says. They believe that because a few people killed with guns, doesn't mean the whole country can't have them. The democratic paty believes more in the promise of gun control, as an attempt to stop the violence that has ocurred at Columbine and Virgina Tech. They believe that stricter laws will cut down gun violence signifigantly.-environmental laws-Democrats tend to belive strongly in the protection of our environment; not only to preserve our earth, but to create new jobs in the alternate energy feilds.Though the Republicans do care about the Environment, it seems that it doesn't hold absolute precedence to them. For example, the issue of drilling for oil. Republicans support it, and I even read an article about them proposing to use the land in protected national parks.-affirmative action laws- The democrats generally approve of affirmative action, believing it is right to correct the wrongs and eliminate descrimination against women and minorities. However, the republican party can be quoted as calling it "reverse desrimination" believing that it gives better opportunities to minorities than to the predominate population of caucasions. It is also believed to increase the tension between differant races, and only help the wealthy in minority groups.-immigration- The democratic party believes in the promise of citizenship for all those who want it. It is also maintained that those who come here illegally but work hard, contribute, and have a clean background check, should be allowed a chance at citizenship. The Republicans, though not thrilled with legal immigration, do support it. However, they do not in the least supposrt illegal immigration, and believe that those found to be illegal should be deported. The path to citizenship for illegals who work is not supported.-minimum wage- Democratic support has been, over the years, very high for the raising of minimum wage. They believe its simply the right thing to do, as many families now live on minimum wage. You see, the republican party believes it to be the government's attempt to control the running of a business and the pay the workers recieve.-health care- Democrats generally believe that health care should be avalible to everyone, and see it as an American right. The republicans see it as a step toward socialism, where the government controlls everything. To them, this is unacceptable.-taxes- Democrats are known for their veiw on taxing the wealthy for being just that, wealthy. Republicans are against this, believing that that is massively unfair.-military spending- In general, the democrats are against the excessiveness of military spending. They believe in cutting it, while the republicans believe in expanding it.-death penalty- The democrats generally are against the death penalty, believing its wrong and is far too harsh. The republicans however are for it, believing that it is the purest form of justice.-gay marriage- The democrats are for gay marrige, with the belief that everyone should be equal in their rights as far as who they choose to be with. The republicans tend to believe in upholding the sanctity of marrige; keeping it between a man and woman.-prayer in school- The republicans support voluntary prayer for students. Not instructed or forced, but still allowed. The democrats don't support it whatsoever.-US role in the world--Iraq- at one point, it seemed that the democrats and republicans were differant, the democrats completely against it, republicans for it. However, the democratic veiw changes a lot and at some points seems to at times support and at others hinder.-Us role in the United Nations- The GOP can be shown as having some hostility toward the UN, whilst the democrats generally support it.
