Monday- Watched Hotel Rwanda.
Tuesday/Wednesday- Took class map quiz. Finished discussing genocides.
Holodomor- People were dying of starvation. Stalin prevented people from getting food. Some people called it a famine because people weren't eating. Some people called it a genocide because of all the deaths. He used to get along with Hitler. By 1933, 25% of Ukraine's population was dead. Up to 10 million people died, including 3 million children. Blamed on shortage of food, not that he wouldn't let them have food. If he found you eating, you would be punished. He tried to hide it until other countries found out about it. Other countries tried to provide food for them. UN wasn't created yet. US didn't find out about it right away. Once we did find out, we wanted to do everything we could to help them out. Stalin wanted to be in charge and did not want other people helping him out. 30,000 people died a day and about 1/3 were under the age of 10.
Japan vs. China- Japanese troops raided China. In 1937, lots of raping and killing. Been at war and wanted to take the city down. Almost 1,000 women were raped each day. 300,000 people were killed in Nan King. Japanese soldiers. The war just ended, no one stopped it. 250,000 refugees. War crime trials to the Japanese for doing what they did to the Chinese. Bad blood still between the two countries.
Cambodia- President of Cambodia wanted to move all the resources to Cambodia so it could become a self-independent country. US started bombing cities in Cambodia after Vietnam war. Polpot started moving people out of that area and had an "army". They were moved into a territory where he would have better watch out for them. His first plan was to starve them, and they got 2 bowls of rice. They then had people dig their own grave and would bury them alive. 1.17-3.42 million people were killed. Cambodia declared war on Vietnam and about 3,000 people died during that war. About 25% of Cambodia's population was killed. Khmer Rouge went up against Vietnam and thousands were killed from both sides. The UN helped the refugees again Polpot and Khmer Rouge. IT ended during the battle of the two countries. It is known that he either got poisoned or committed suicide.
Holocaust- Hitler was from Germany. Jews were taken to concentration camps and were gassed and burned. 11 million people were killed, 1.1 million were children, 6 million were Jews. Homosexuals and gypsies were targeted the most.
