ISSUE PRESENTATIONS:

Radical Islam (Oscar, Spencer, Eli)-

Sunni- practices based on reports of the actions of Muhammad and those close to him. ISIS aims to over take them. Sunni dominates in Iran and Iraq and most of the Muslim community.

Shia- believe only the people who are descendants of Muhammad should lead the Muslim people

There have been many ways between the Sunni and Shia. Shia dominates in Iran and Iraq and Sunni dominates most of the Muslim community.

Al Qaeda- aims to influence the West and replace governments with Islamic regimes

They think they are losing their culture and hate the West for our progressive ways that interfere with their religion. They will die for their religion.

5 pillars of Islam-

1. Shahada- there is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the prophet of Allah. They face East towards Mecca, Saudi Arabia when the pray (they believe thats where Muhammad walked)

2. Salat- pray 5x a day

3. Sawm- fasting (withhold from food, drink, sex)

4. Haji- pilgrimage to Mecca to pray in front of the stone that Muhammad touches

5. Zakat- Almsgiving (non-poor Muslims are required to give a percentage of their income to the poor)

We then watched an Islam 101 Video.

- Quaran (Muslim equivalent-Bible) focuses on strict monotheism and giving back to the poor and less fortunate

- Pray 5x a day towards Mecca (explained in 5 pillars of Islam)

Sharia Law- a set of laws that Muslims must abide by; many different interpretations of these laws which has created conflict

Islam does not have separation of Church and State like most Christianity dominant countries.

Thursday- More presentations

Biodiversity-

What does it mean- it means the variety of life and how to coexist with one another

As the population keeps growing, there is a higher demand for necessities

Women's fertility rate in United States has gone up by 10 points in recent years- reason unclear

More and more wood is needed to make homes- causing deforestation

Over fishing is a big problem due to a high demand -numbers of other species to decline (its predators will also decline because they are losing their food supply)

Accidental introduction to new species in different habitats- throwing the fish ecosystem

As pollution rise, number of species fall

In Beijing the air quality is horrible- if you breath in the air it is equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day

What is being done?- Many foundations have been set up to protect animals, habitats, reduce pollution, deforestation, endangered species, etc.
