  • Feudalism
    • Began in Europe as a way to offer protection
    • Based on land and loyalty
    • Land-owning lords offer land to knights in exchange for their loyalty and promise to protect the lord's land
  • Chivalry
    • Knights were expected to show courage in battle and loyalty to their lord, and protect the weak and poor
    • Ideal knights were loyal, brave, and courteous
      • Most knights failed to meet these standards
      • In reality, treated the poor brutally
    • Knight must fight bravely in defense of three masters
      • lord, god, and their women
    • The code of Chivalry
      • Fair play-never attack an unarmed foe, never attack from behind, avoid torture
      • Nobility-self discipline, obey the law, respect women
      • Valor-Avenge the wronged, fight with honor
      • Honor-keep one's word, respect life
      • Courtesy-manners, polite and attentive, respectful
      • Loyalty-to god, country, and the code of chivalry
  • Roman Catholic church(conflict between church and state)
    • The church unified the division made by feudalism
    • It was a stable force during a time of upheaval
    • People live harsh lives, but could achieve salvation
    • Church law-
      • church law=canon law
        • marriage and religion
      • Courts established to carry law out
        • Punishments:excommunication and interdict
      • Popes use excommunication to control kings-kicked them out of church
      • Continued disobedience by a king=the inderdict
        • the Sacraments and religious services could not be performed in said king's lands
      • Laws give the Church near ultimate authority
