Late 1800s start to see start of imperialism.. start to see greed and want of power around the world, alliances formed, Europe breaks out into war, because Europe has so many colonies it becomes a world war. we get involved because of reasons listed yesterday, Zimmerman note, we are good in the war cause we've got a lot of stuff.. we win and get The Treaty of Versailles. The treaty was the end of WWI, and it lead to WWII. The treaty basically destroyed Europe. Hitler came into power in around 1930 and hated it. The hall of mirrors is where they signed the treaty; it was a big beautiful part of the Versailles Palace. The Big Four- US, Great Britain, France, and Italy... Wilson for the United States, you could say the Big Three with subtracting Italy. One thing that came out of the treaty was a change in the map of Europe. After the war came Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungry, and Yugoslavia. Poland was one that stood out. One of Hitler’s goal was to reunite all of the German speaking people. Austria wanted to become a part of Germany after WWI, but the powers would not let that happen.Wilson's 14 Points -not out to punish Germany, to change countries for the better1. An end to secret treaties2. Freedom of the seas3. Free trade for all countries4. Disarmament5. End to colonial chains6. Self determination for all countries, as long as they choose Democracy7. Restoration of Belgium8. Restoration of France9. Readjustment of Italy's boundaries10. Austria-Hungary would be given opportunity for autonomous development11. Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro should be evacuated and restored12. Turkey should be sovereign13. Poland would be given their independance14. The "League of Nations" would be developedTreaty of VersaillesTerritorialThe following land was taken away from Germany-Alsace-Lorraine, Eupen and Malmedy, Northern Schleswid, Hultschin, West Prussia, Posen and Upper SilesiaThe Saar, Danzig, and Memel were put under the control of the League of Nations and the people of these regions would be allowed to vote to stay in Germany of not in a future referendumMilitaryGermany’s army was reduced to 100,000 men and the army was not allowed tanks, they were not allowed an airforce and were only allowed a certain amount of submarines.FinancialGermany had to pay 33 billion dollars; it seemed clear to Germany that the Allies wanted nothing else but to bankrupt them. We ended up lending money to Germany, they used that to pay Great Britain and France, and they used that to pay the United States back.General1. Germany had to admit full responsibility for starting the war. This was Clause 231- the infamous “War Guilt Cause”2. Germany, as it was responsible for starting the war as stated in clause 231, was therefore responsible for all the war damage caused by the first world war. Therefore, they had to pay reparations, the bulk of which would go to France and Belgium to pay for the damage done to both countries during the war. $33,000,000,000.3. A League of Nations was set up to keep would peace.League of NationsBig problem: no military force. This thing failed in the 1930’s because it lacked a lot of credibility. Basically all we did was say that people needed to not invade, countries laughed and it and was like whatever I will do what I want. The only country that felt good coming out of the war was Japan. They came out super strong, they did not lose any land that they had owned previously to the war.Congress was run by the Republican Party, Wilson did not want to compromise with Congress. The congress did not want to join the League of Nations, for various reasons, congress did not want to pass the Treaty of Versailles, so Wilson traveled the country trying to make people be all happy for it. At the time, Harding’s campaign slogan was returning to normalcy, which was returning to isolation. He won the election. At first this was great, in the 1920’s the United States hit a great big boom time, then the 1930’s rolled in and the stock market crashed.
