So weve lost internet connection a lot. And word hasn’t worked and blah blah,People started taking tests and im gonna make a little study guide for when I take my test…Goal- recieve full indepepndence for Cuba, there were also a lot of people in America that wanted to take over Cuba. The anti-imperialists said that they would not vote to go to war with Spain unless they promised to give Cuba independence after the war. The Cubans fought over the Spanish numerous times for indepepndece and the Americans did not want that to happen to us. They also saw it to be hypocritical because when Great Britain took over America we wanted to fight back for our independence, so we did not want to do what Great Britain did to us.Jose Marti was a Cuban leader that pushed very hard for Cuban indepence. He was the guy that spoke out against the spanish and even did some sabatoging such as destroying land that americans owned in cuba. He wanted to do it not to get us mad at him but he wanted it to look like the spanish was destroying american property. One of the causes of the Spanish American War was destruction on American property in Cuba.General Valeriano Weyler was sent to Cuba to kinda keep control and peace in the country. He rounded up a lot of rural cubans and put them into concentration camps. The people that died in them died mainly from disease and starvation. The yellow press called him "the butcher." That came from the them saying that he was "butchering" the people in the concentration camps. The yellow press were newspapers in that day that lied and really stretched the truth. The main reason me went to war with Spain was the sinking of the US ship called The Maine.William Randolph Hearst was the main newspaper dude of the day. Joseph Pulitzer was his main competition. These two guys owned the most important newspaper companies in New York City and in the United States. The yellow press got the name from "The Yellow Kid," the first colored comic of the day. After the Maine was sunk, the war cry was, "Rememer the Maine, to h@%$ with Spain!"Enrique Dupay de Lome was the Spanish Ambassador to the United States. He wrote a letter to the United States which was interecepted by the yellow press, and in that letter included national insults torwards President McKinly, saying that he was a wimp and had so Spine. "A bitter for the admiration of the crowd."The Maine was being sent to the Havanna Harbor to protect American property there. It was exploded and that started the war. 258 American Soliders died in the explosion, it is now thought it was just a malfunction in the ship, but at the time it was thought that it was purposely done by the spaniard people.General Causes of the War- Destruction of American property and investments in Cuba, Concentration camps in Cuba, The Yellow Press, Sinking of the Maine, De Lome Letter published by the yellow press, Jingoism belied that the United States should go to war, many think that jingoes pressured McKinly into war.John Hay called the war "A Splendid Little War."Casualties, 385 Combat DeathsWhat we got our of the war- Cuba got independence with strings attatched, we got Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Phillipines for $20 Million. Every year from 1907, the Philippines people would try and get independence, but that stopped during WW1, to support the U.S. against Germany. In 1919, the Philippines passed a bill that gave freedom to Filipinos, and the U.S. would give the country over as soon as a stable government was established. In 1935, Manuel Quezon was elected President of the U.S. contolled Philippines. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in WW2, the Japanese attacked Cities on the Philippines, occupied by the Japanese.
