Imagine hearing gunshots firing around you. Laying on the ground, crawling to just get away from all the violence and bloodshed. Bodies are freshly slain right in front of you. Cries of agony and footsteps get closer behind you. Scared and startled, you climb underneathe the bodies of your family to avoid getting killed yourself.Do you know where you are right now? Your in the Darfur/Sudan region. The recent history of the Sudan area had been filled with tragic bloodshed. It seems to me that every regime was overthown in a matter of decades and the revolution was always bloody. And on top of that, the tribes of the Darfur area have been engaged in battles since they were established. I'll start off with the British and Egytian forces that overthrew the current government and established a government of their own. Then groups of Islamic Extremists formed and were put down by the governmen of Sudan, which was the British basically. Then Sudan got independance. And groups within Sudan began to get very volatile. The Musilms ran the government officially, but seem to not be very popular with their people considering how many are against them. One of the most volatile areas is Darfur, Sudan's eastern most province.
A major rebel group, known as The Sudan Liberation Army has been engaging Government and Arab-Musilm soldiers in a militia since 2003 when all the violence broke out. The government has been accused on numerous accounts by the UN for targetting ethnic groups to kill and for Inhumane treatment of their own people. However, even by taking such a stout position against them, the UN remains to have not commited a whole lot of effort towards stopping this. With this fighting going on, as many as 400,000 Sudanians lay dead and 4 million are displaced in refugee camps and other relief areas.
I personally think that if this is genocide and if the UN is completely against it, they should not expect it to go away and instead make something happen. You can't just say its bad and then not do anyhting to stop it. Well, the Sudanese Government doesn't want them their but how would they stop the UN from doing something?
