Darfur/Sadan

Darfur is the size of France or Texas and is located in western Sudan. A horrible crisis started in February 2003 where the United Nations estimated that over 200,000 people were killed. It caused 2.5 million to move from their original location, and four million relied on volunteers to help them survive. There are many causes of what happened there, but the main issues are they are underdeveloped and marginalization. Also because discrimination of different ethnic groups, they also have failed to distribute power and wealth equally. Others say that they cannot control their environment. The United Nations believes it is because of Global Warming; they have had 40% less precipitation. The war started because the Sudanese Liberation Army (SLA), and the JEM (Justice and Equality Movement). The JEM wanted to over through the Sudanese and battle government forces. The government had favored the Arabs over the black people. Sudanese military and the Janjaweed were one group, and the other one was composed of Sudan Liberation Movement/Army and JEM. The government secretly sided with the Janjaweed and helped them out. The United States announced that this was genocide, but the United Nations never did say it was. Many say that it is pathetic that none of us have carried through on our actions and have tried to stop this genocide. The UN had stated that they might have miscalculated by 50 percent on the death toll. Many groups have evaluated how many have died wrong, because they were also calculating how many people died from diseases and malnutrition. What is the world coming to, if everybody always results in violence? We should have stepped in there and stopped it before it got out of hand. So many women are getting raped and everyday more and more die; I can’t believe that the UN didn’t do more to help.3Madison
