Darfur

Darfur is located in the western part of Sudan. It all started in February of 2003. Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) took up arms against the Sudan government accusing them of oppressing black Africans in favor of Arabs. The Government of Sudan has attempted to cover up any sign of genocide by tampering with tapes and interrogating and harassing journalists to prevent wide spread coverage on the subject. The United States Government has stated it as genocide The UN has not recognized it as genocide.Sudanese officials have an estimated death toll of 19,500 civilians. But other organizations like the Coalition for International Justice claim it is more like 400,000. In September 2004 18 months into the incident the World Health Organization estimated about 50,000 deaths mostly due to starvation. The next month they issued another statement that said the number was at 70,000 due to starvation and Disease. A more recent estimate made by the British Parliamentary report states that 300,000 people have died.
