Daily Summary-10/22/09

Today we did presentations. In 1833 the Brooklyn bridge was opened, it took 14 years to build. In 1870 there were 25 cities that had a population of 15,000 which i didnt know. More cities had recreational areas. By 1890 the literacy rate had gone up 95%. Paper was becoming easier to produce. In 1903 the wright brothers created the airplane. In 1888 in Virginia the state became the first state to electrify its urban transportation, which i didnt know, thats cool. Steel cable was used on the Brooklyn bridge. In 1850 the population was 30,000 and in 1870 it grew to 300,000 in Chicago. In 1880 the literacy rate in the United States rose to 90%. William Harris was the Comissioner of Education from 1889-1906. He was the Superintendent of a St Louis school, also started kindergarten. There were one room school houses in the 1800s. Between 1865-1895 children were required to go to school. There was a huge increase in kindergarten in the 1900s. High Schools started early. High Schools had more that half a million students. 10 million immagrants came to the united states between 1860 and 1890. Most african americans attended private schools. In 1910 3% of african americans attended high schools. In the 1900s 3,880 african americans attended college.I thought that there were no one room schoolhouses in the city. I thought that type of schoolhouse only appeared on the plains. I was really surprised when I learned the Brooklyn Bridge took 14 years to build, that’s a really long time to build one bridge. I was also surprised at the number of immigrants that came to the United States in the 1800s.

  • This is much better! Good reflections! I would still like to see you break up that long, first paragraph a bit.
