William Howard Taft had a few great accomplishments in his term as president, but also made a few controversial decisions. A couple of these achievements and “slip ups” include: the Payne-aldrich Tariff, Dollar Diplomacy, sent marines to Nicaragua, Antitrust actions (1911), Webb-Kenyon Interstate Liquor Shipments Act of 1913, and ratified the 16 amendment.
Payne-Aldrich Tariff- Act of 1909 raised tariffs on goods/ Representative Payne introduced a low tariff, but by the time it was put into place, The tariff had risen more rates. Instead of vetoing, Taft passed it and called it the best tariff ever passed by the republicans.

During Taft’s term, there was a dispute over Mexican-American border. In 1911, the two presidents at the time, (Taft and Porfirio Diaz) had a summit over the matter. This was historic. although they hadn’t completely come to an agreement at the time, it eventually happened in 1963. He also appointed Ballinger as secretary of the interior, who gave 1 million acres of forestry back to the people.
In his presidential term, Taft had busted 90 trusts, for example: Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and the American Tobacco Company - won lawsuit against the American Sugar Refining Company it was to break up the sugar trust that rigged prices. Taft went to try and break up U.S. Steel, but then Roosevelt accused him lack of insight unable to distinguish between good and bad trusts.

- The 16th Amendment states that The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration (law.cornell.edu)

-Policy towards African-Americans- National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) It was suppose to make sure african americans had political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights trying to get rid of racial hatred and discrimination.

The Break-up of the Republican Party was a result of numerous things. Taft was too cautious to hold up both wings of the republican party. Joe Cannon was chairman of the House rules committee, which decides what bills congress looks over.

the outcome of the 1912 Presidential Election was pretty easy to predict. Republicans fell apart by the time the election started. Democrats win  Governor Woodrow Wilson’s leadership, endorsed a progressive platform called the New Freedom. Stronger antitrust legislation, banking reform, and reduced tariffs. Both Roosevelt and Wilson believed in a stronger government with big businesses government should be involved.
