After world war 1 the League of Nations was created to prevent another world war They were the predecessor to the United Nations. They are a group of worldwide peace keepers. League of Nations was eliminated during World War 2 because it failed. In 1945 near the end of World War 2 we created the United Nations to replace the League of Nations. American did not join the League of Nations. The United Nations maintains international peace. They work to maintain a good relationship between countries. And they work to promote economic development for member nations. It provides as forum for almost all the world's nations to discuss international issues. Humanitarian efforts include AIDS, Landmine removal, food and supply organization, and so much more. They are thought of as peacekeeping forces. Almost all countries in the world are members of the UN. They are currently.139/195 countries in the UN in 2017. There headquarters is in New York City. Parts of the United Nations. The General Assembly - The town meeting of the world. UN Security Council - Maintains world peace (most powerful branch) Made up of only 15 countries. There are 5 permanent countries. China, france, Great Britain, Russia, US. there are 10 no permanent country's elected every year. 5 Permanent. 2 Asia, 3 Africa, 2 Latin America, Eastern Europe 1, Western Europe 2. Recommends peaceful negotiations. They use economic sanctions. They can also use military force. If all 15 members pass something all 193 members must abide by it. They can have economic sanctions where trade and shipping has been cut off for certain countries except food. We do this to get people to rise up and overthrow their government. Economic and Social Council - works to improve the world’s standard of living and protect living rights. Trusteeship Council - Deals with territories. ICJ - international Court of Justice. The Secretariat - Administrative duties and can ring any topic before the SC. North Korea. We put out more economic sanctions. There response is hey are threatening to sink japan and reduce the US to ashes and darkness due to the new sanctions. UN peacekeepers who wear blue berets or helmets to identify themselves. Weaknesses of the Un are sanctions only works if ALL countries follow them. Military force is rarely used and is rather ineffective. All permanent members have to vote unanimously. There was a believed terrorist attack when a timed bomb went off in London in an underground train stop. Trump now wants to put a travel ban out there again because he wants to know who's coming into our country. Some people think with refugees he is unreasonable by his over concern of terrorist.
