For our assigned blog this week we were to choose a topic discussed in chapter 15 and expand on it. Chapter 15 is based off of the New Deal. I chose to blog about section 4, Culture in the 1930s.Movies were a main source of entertainment in the 1930s. People would line up to pay $ .25 to go to the movies. One of the most popular movies in the 1930s was Gone with the Wind, staring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. A few more well known movies still watched today from the 1930s are The Wizard of OZ and Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, by Walt Disney. Another form of entertainment in the 1930s was radio. Families would spend hours listening to different programs. One major announcement that came across the radio in the late 1930s was Martians had invaded earth, Americans thought the world was coming to an end.During the 1930s American painters produced many works of art. One of the most famous paintings was American Gothic; this painting can be seen around many offices today. The house in this painting was founded by Grant Wood of Eldon, Iowa. He used his sister and his dentist as the man and woman in this painting.
Writers were able to receive support through the Federal Writers’ Project. John Steinbeck was able to publish his novel called The Grapes of Wrath. This book is commonly read yet today. This book is about the lives of people from Oklahoma who left the Dust Bowl and ended up in California and continued their hardships.
I found Chapter 15 interesting. Section 4 was my favorite and that is why i felt that i should blog about it. It's good to know the peole of that time had a life and had entertainment. Although the entertainment of that time is different than now i still feel that it made their lives more interesting.Sources:http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/6565http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032551/mediaindex
