On the evening of August 3rd 1492, Columbus set off from Palos de la Frontera with three ships, the largest Santa Maria, and two smaller ones named Pinta and Nina. Land was sighted at 2 in the morning on October 12th 1492. They spotted the Island of The Bahamas. Later the expedition explored Cuba, the expedition thought they found the passage, but boy where they wrong. After all this they headed back to Europe, upon arrival word spread fast.
A second voyage was made and brought 1,200 men to colonize the region in the Caribbean’s. On the islands that were inhabited by Spanish settlers the Taino Tribes on the islands encountered stiff resistance from the Spanish Settlers. The Spanish’s weapons proved superior. Mass suicides of Taino people came upon, 250,000 Taino people were dead, the remainder were taken as slaves and set to work on plantations. In later times the Spanish slowly started settling more and more people in. Slowly but surely they ended up setting up settlements on the mainland United States. The rest is history, they ravaged the Native Americans on the mainland as well.-Cody Schwery
