Civil War

The American Civil War was four years long; it went from 1861 to 1865. It was also called the War Between the States. Eleven slave states seceded from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis led this Confederacy. The Confederate States fought against The Union. The Union was the U.S. Federal Government and was supported by the free states and the five bordering slave states in the North.The Presidential Election of 1860 was led by Abraham Lincoln. It campaigned against slavery and the Republican victory of the election created the seven Southern States. That declared their secession from the Union. On April 12, 1861 the Confederates attacked a U.S. Military Installation in South Carolina at Fort Sumter. Then Lincoln reacted by calling for volunteer army’s from each state. On April 9, 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.The Civil War caused 620,000 soldiers to die. It was the deadliest war in American history. It ended slavery in the United States, means reaching Abraham Lincoln’s goal.
