China Against the Consumption of Dog and Cat meat?

There is a debate going on in the Chinese government about whether or not they should ban the eating of act or dog meat. There are multiple farms across China that raise cats and dogs in horrible inhumane conditions to sell to restaurants for food.

In Guangzhou, China restaurants serve a multitude of dishes containing dog meat. On the menus you can find dishes like the famous dog hot pot, dog steak, or even dog soup; while in the kitchen you can find the chefs butchering dog meat to prepare the much enjoyed dishes. The eating of cats and dogs is part of the Chinese culture as well as the Korean and Vietnamese cultures. People justify this by saying that dog meat is good for you and can help you sweat in the summer.

Those who want to ban the practices suggest that doing so would show the world a whole new level of civilization. The government is on board as they had banned the serving of dog meat at restaurants during the Beijing Olympic Games and also during the upcoming Asian Games. Under this new law offenders would have to pay a fine of 500,000 Yuan, which is the equivalent of $73,000, and up to 15 days in prison.

I think that this reform would be a good thing because even if they were raised on the farms, they were treated cruelly. Often times they aren’t even raised there; they are lost pets or sometimes stolen. Plus how could you bear to eat what you know could have been a cute little puppy or kitty?

  • I would have a hard time seeing someone eat a cat or dog, that's for sure!
