Child Labor

During the time of the Industrial Revolution, kids as young as four years of age were employed in production factories with dangerous and even fatal (death) working conditions! Now in richer or wealthier countries, child labourers is highly frowned upon. The Victorian era was notorious (meaning big) for child labourers. Putting them in factories to work for minimum wage and putting the kid's parents in jail which would make them want to work even harder to get them out. They called the jail Debtors Prison. Obviously where they went if they were in debt. The Victorian era was named after Queen Victoria. (1837-1901)Some of the agile kids would be hired as chimney cleaners, meaning they would be lowered into chimneys to clean the smoke resin from it. Small children, were employed to crawl under big and small machinery to retrieve cotton bobbins, which are wound rolls of cotton. They were also hired to be crossing sweepers, to sell matches (weird), shoe cleaners, or as they called it, shoe blacks. and they also were use to sell other cheap goods for money.Working hours for these kids and adults were discustingly long. Builders worked 64 hours a week in summer and 52 in winter, while domestic servants worked 80 hour weeks. The normal person now works only 40 hour weeks. A domestic servant is basically a maid or a butler now days.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_erahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_labour
