Chapter 9

Before the progressive era assembly lines weren’t efficient at all. Assembly lines weren’t invented by just one person they have been invented then reinvented over and over again. Before the twentieth century craftsman or a team of craftsman would have an assembly line and make products by hand. They would use little hand tool such as knives or files. Henry Ford was known as the father of the assembly lines in mass production. He reduced hours and paid workers five dollars and hour (which is equal to $111.10 a day in 2008.) to keep them from going on strike. Most assembly lines are now run with machines and not by people which has cut jobs.

Fredrick Winslow Taylor was one of the most intellectual leaders of the efficiency movement. Taylor was and American engineer who tried to improve industrial efficiency. He did studies on improving industry by doing tasks in simpler parts. This system was called "Taylorism". He was one of the first management consultants and is known as the father of scientific management. He would take jobs and break them down into hundredths and do them one at time which would turn out to be easier.

Scientific management is also known as “Taylorism.” is a theory of management that analyzes workflows, with the objective of improving labor productivity. The first ideas and theory were invented by Fredrick Taylor in the 1880s and 1890s. Taylorism is a varation on the theme of efficientcy. In management literacy today the best use of the concept of Taylorism is as a contrast to a new, improved way of doing business. Taylorism is often mentioned along with Fordism, because it was closely associated with mass production methods in manufacturing factories.

Henry Ford - Henry Ford was the american founder of the Ford Motor company. He was also the father of modern assembly lines and mass production. As the owner of Ford motor company he became one of the richest and best known people in the world. He is also known for creating "Fordism" which was the mass production of large numbers of inexpensive automobiles using the assembly line. Also high wages for his workers.Ford announced his $5-per-day program on January 5, 1914. The changing program called for a raise in minimum daily pay from $2.34 to $5 for qualifying workers. It also set a new, reduced workweek, although the details vary in different accounts. Ford and Crowther in 1922 it was six 8-hour days, giving a 48-hour week, While in 1926 they set it as five 8-hour days, giving a 40-hour week.
