Chapter 15- Franklin D Roosevelt (The New Deal)

Franklin D. Roosevelt was born into a wealthy family from New York on January 30, 1882. His full name is Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was an only child. His parents were James and Sara Roosevelt. His father was a landowner and a business man, he was considerably wealthy. Franklin spent most of his childhood at the Hyde Park. He was also home schooled until he was teen. At the age of 14 he was sent to a school by the name of Groton. Groton was a private school for wealthy families. Franklin was not one of the most popular or athletic at his school, but started to admire his distant cousin while he was there. Once FDR graduated he attended Harvard College. While at college he had average grades. After receiving his undergraduate degree he started to take his school work more seriously. When his cousin Theodore became president, Franklin became a part of the Democratic Party. While at college Franklin was fond of Alice Sohier, but she turned him down. When Alice turned down FDR he soon had a soft spot for Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, who was Theodore’s niece. When Franklin and Eleanor became young adults they fell in love. The only problem was Sara, Franklin’s mother because she was extremely protective of her only son. The couple finally married on March 17, 1905. Later on they had two sons, James and Franklin Jr. After a while Franklin attended Columbia University to study law, but never graduated.

Franklin became involved in politics in 1910 when he was elected to be the State Senate of New York. Later on he became assistant secretary of the navy. In 1921 FDR was diagnosed with poliomyelitis, which nearly completely paralyzed him. He never fully recovered because he never regained full ability in his legs. Eventually though he was able to walk with braces on his legs. Herbert Hoover was president during the Stock Market Crash of 1929. He refused to help those who were unemployed in the urban areas. FDR was governor of New York during this time and worked hard to try and help those who were jobless. In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt became a democratic presidential candidate. He then won the election beating out former president Herbert Hoover. Before Roosevelt was supposed to take office, he was shot at while attending a rally in Belmont Park. He moved into the White House in 1933. His first act was to try and deal with the bank crisis. Since the crash people lost faith in the banks and were withdrawing all their money. He then asked Congress to pass a bill that stated if there were to be a financial crisis people would not lose their money. Then he tried to get the Congress to pass a bill that would help solve the unemployment problem. The congress passed it and it became known as the New Deal. Franklin was a great president and made many great accomplishments for our country. He died on April 12, 1945.

I feel that Franklin D. Roosevelt was a very strong leader during this time. He did many great things for our country. I really enjoyed researching his past about his presidency and childhood. I’m sure there is so much more great information about him! It was great that he was trying to help those who were unemployed during the depression even when he was not president at the time!Sources:Our book "The Americans" Chapter 15.
